Artist Biography
Laurie’s family moved to California when she was nine. She attended Stephens College and graduated from Northwestern University but it was her accomplishments in areas of fashion, millinery, jewelry making and design where her creative talents soared.
Discovering the Laguna Beach School of Art in 1979,
and instructor Larry Cohen, Laurie was introduced to live model sculpting. Initially this preferred medium was a hobby that filled stolen hours for a busy wife and
mother of four. Over the years she attended local community colleges and artist workshops where she could find models and learn essential artistic techniques and finally discover the dramatic effect of completing her sculptures in bronze.
Laurie was encouraged early in life to be all she could be.
Her father made sure being ‘female’ didn’t stand in her way of pursuing her interests to create and fix things, including learning how to use power tools. Sculpture has united Laurie’s natural mechanical ability, her aptitude for perceiving spatial relations and her observations of life. Her investigation of positive and negative spaces, light and shadows, allows her to realistically recreate the human form in interesting ways. Earned confidence,
retirement, and independence now allow Laurie to passionately apply herself and her
talent to creating lasting works. Her reliefs have opened a new arena that
meets architectural and decor needs, inside and out. Sharing these works with others makes the creative circle complete. Laurie is proud of her accomplishments and pleased to
debut in nine major shows this year. She believes this is just the beginning.
